The Institute’s efforts to pursue and promote a profound and insightful study of Islam, both at the national and international levels, find their sustained projection in its three quarterly research journals: Al-Dirasat al-Islamiyyah (Arabic), Islamic Studies (English) and Fikr-o-Nazar (Urdu) as well as its books and other publications in Arabic, Urdu and English.
The Institute has published more than 150 books on various Islamic subjects dealing mostly with Islamic Law and History, Philosophy, Education, Culture and other areas. These books have been equally appreciated by people belonging to different schools of thought in Pakistan and have served as good models of serious and responsible research not only in modern universities but also in the institutions of traditional religious learning. By emphasizing the common denominators in our intellectual heritage, by addressing itself to issues that are of concern to all sections of the Pakistani society and to Muslims of all shades of opinion, and by adopting an approach which finds a resonance in the hearts and minds of the upholders of both traditional and modern perspectives, the Institute has been contributing to an informed and responsible intellectual interaction between different sections of the society.
Great Books of Islamic Civilization
An important project being currently pursued is the publication of one hundred significant and rare books of Islamic thought, culture and civilization. Under the plan one hundred great books, classified subject-wise under twelve broad categories of knowledge, are to be produced. The works of the Great Books series, selected in consultation with eminent scholars as books of first intensity that have mattered in the history of human thought in general and Islamic thought in particular, have been authored by the early savants, sages and scientists and are thought to have laid the foundation of a new faith-inspired and knowledge-based Islamic Civilization in human history.
The Great Books series is in addition to the Institute’s regular programme of publication under which, among other projects, classical works which presently exist as manuscripts are to be translated, edited and published. More than a dozen manuscripts in the fields of Islamic Law, Jurisprudence, History and Tasawwuf have already been published and many more are in various stages of preparation for printing. These efforts form part of the Institute’s humble contribution towards bringing to light the intellectual achievements of Muslim scholars, thinkers and scientists and preserving the cultural legacy of Islam.
The Islamic Research Institute has been assiduously trying for the past 43 years to promote in-depth understanding of Islam, its thought, history, civilization, culture and world-view. Though its primary concern is the fostering of the intellectual tradition of Islam in all its dimensions, it has also been contributing to the promotion of inter-faith and inter-civilizational dialogue to lay a firm basis for an understanding between Islam and other religious and cultural traditions. It has been playing its role in projecting Islam’s principles and values, its message of peace and amity to the world, and its universal blessing conquering all differences and prejudices.
